Country music died last night

In entertainment, there are certain personalities whose name evokes a genre or style. When one thinks of western movies, one thinks of John Wayne, when one thinks of rock music, one thinks of Elvis Presley. Jazz?Louis Armstrong. So it is with country music and Johnny Cash, at least in my opinion. I thought of that the morning after he died last year.

Country music died last night

Country music died last night,

its face a craggy shell,

with straggled white hair

and weathered eyes,

the look of the old man on the mountain.

The old man's voice

was strong and deep,

a sincere bass under

slicked back, coal-black hair

which seemed older

than its years.

Clothed in a somber suit,

it sang with deep emotion,

of moaning trains and prison yards,

of lonely urban Sundays

and warm country churches

and cold, trembling chemical slaves.

Of fighting mad rebel lads,

asking "what is truth?"

Of boys named Sue,

redeemed by the Blood

and a good woman's love.

A butterfly in mid-July

for whom he walked the line

a poor boy from Arkansas

over a ring of fire.

Country music died last night,

known mostly by its alias

And to the reaper ws polite,

When its time came,

it turned and said

"Hello, I'm Johnny Cash."

a hit with me for sure. He was beyond anything Nashville offers today, no matter how slicker. And he was a baritone voice (being I'm one too) so proud one could prosper in music world of high shrieking voices or cool satin ones. But it was his songwriting and strumming that made him great. Even when he did another's tune he made it anew!
Total cool poem: 5 stars! Sorry I missed it when it came out - I wasn't on AD

Perhaps a piece of it did die, but only to join the part that will always live on. Johnny Cash was the greatest.
