American journalism lost one of its icons on July 17, 2009 with the passing of Walter Cronkite. Cronkite's death came just a few days before the 40th anniversary of the first manned landing on the Moon. Cronkite's interest in the space program was apparent on the day Apollo 11 took off for the lunar surface and this is a reflection on that time. In answer to the question at the end of this poem, I'd say yes because a part of all of mankind went to the moon and not only landed with the Eagle, but also made that giant leap with Neil Armstrong

The dignified gentleman

with the fatherly growl

was everybody's uncle.

He saw us through conflicts

and shared our weariness with one.

He saw us through storms

both human and natual

in stern but comforting tones.

He blinked back tears

as the news from Dallas

made us weep.

Oh, but there was that summer day

in the Florida sun,

when he seemed infected with the fever

that gives little boys insomnia on Dec. 24

As the great colossus prepared

to rip away from earth,

taking men to the moon,

as the countdown approached liftoff,

The Voice of Authority became part little boy,

marveling hat a wish was coming true .

"Oh boy!"

In the great voice's body,

an awestruck youngster thrilled at

the great adventure about to unfold.

Did a part of him go into the stars

and land with the Eagle?

And that's the way it was.

CERTAINLY THE CHARACTER AND INTEGRITY OF THIS GREAT MAN, WHO ALSO HAPPENED TO BE AN OUTSTANDING NEWCASTER CANNOT BE QUESTIONED AND I BELIEVE THAT A LITTLE BIT OF HIM, AS WITH ALL REALLY DEDICATED PROFESSIONALS, WENT INTO EVERY WORK HE WAS A PART OF...THAT THE WAY IT IS. WELL DONE AND THANKS FOR SHARING. JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Tuberculosis: The Greatest Story Never Told by Frank Ryan

The heroic story of how a small group of people, few of them TB experts, found the cure for the greatest killer in human history. But the battle needed to be extended to all sufferers. Why have we failed to take the miracle to the developing world?
