Burt Bacharach is my favorite musician-composer, but in the summer of 1965, I wasn't all that impressed with one of his most famous collaborations with Hal David-Jackie DeShannon's recording of "what the World Needs Now (is Love)".
Everybody tried to convince me that the point of the song was that the world would be a better place if we loved each other and cared for our fellow man.
That wasn't my interpretation, but over the years, I grew up a little and got the message. This is my apologies for being a narrow-minded 10-year-old.

Burt, Hal and Dionne-
You wrote the sound track
of my life.

Burt, Hal and Jackie?
Well, nobody's perfect.
So please accept my apologies.

Burt and Hal were the best,
but when you met Jackie,
your hearts may have meant well...

But to a self-conscious 10-year-old
fighting those emerging feelings
amid the snickers of others
What the World didn't need now was love.

That's not what you meant?
How would I know?
There are things that kids
might not understand

Yes, there are different kinds of love.
But do they sing songs about them on the radio?
And little boys could always use more mountains,
meadows, hillsides and rivers.
But girls are still icky.

All kinds of people,
I like the "B" side better.
Same thought without anything which might
cause mean freckle-faced eight-year-olds
to make smooching noises.
