Survey the land
mark it out
for new mini-malls
and crushed condos.

Look how the grandfather clock
could be a scarecrow indoors
with old scarves and hats draped,
showing just how shabby chic
this family room can get.

The kitchen, updated
with granite counter tops
that shine with their weight,
inviting prep work –
celery, carrots, onions – all
chopped with a glamorous knife.

The family who lives here
works all day
at high-tech CEO jobs.
Then each spouse slaves away
in his and her posh home offices.

How often are they home?
After work, more work.
Survey the land
but save some
for deer, fox, elk and moose.

Otherwise
they will get loose, enjoy
this condo all day,
chewing on grandfather’s clock.
