If you had stones in your eye sockets
they would be serene aquamarine,
each one matched in pastel blue
so clear the sky shows through.
Since you’re a thirty-foot statue
made of ocean worn granite
guarding the coast of Brazil,
you can foresee salty serenity.
How prophetic for mariners of yore
to calm their fears of plague.
Some had unreasoning terror
of drowning in African waters.
Some found the sea breeze calming
with your aqua blue eyes staring
for centuries out to sea,
catching enough energy
for them to set sail once again.
How brave our sailors had become
just wishing along with you
for long days of slow swells.
"No, Poseidon, stay away!"
our eyes will say as they grimace,
a vision in blueish green.
And the Gods retreat, every time.
Oh, water of the sea,
you pair of gems doing service so long
as the portals of a looming statue
you don’t embrace the luxury of sleep.
Others like you were scattered
along the edge of Africa
with two streaks of aqua for eyes
so serene, my aquamarine.
