Forever

She sits alone in the bar every night

The half-filled glass held tight in her fist

She sits in the corner out of the light

She is trying to look her best.

She dreams of a time so long ago,

He’d  told her he would meet her there

She waited in vain but he did not show.

Before her, an empty chair.

She remembers the night she fell in love

How they’d danced ‘till the morning came

Her heart had took flight soaring above

They’d kissed then he’d taken her home.

In a week, he had promised to meet her

Right there, in that very same place.

A night of love they would share.

Lost in the warmth, of their embrace

She had waited for him, that Saturday night

She had waited and waited in vain

Her tears had greeted the morning light.

Her heart was filled with pain.

She did not know that he'd gone to war.

How he'd flown straight into the jaws of hell.

His smiling face she would see no more

Of his love, he would never tell.

She waited for him many long years.

She knew he would come to take her away

Daily she greeted the sun with her tears

As homeward, she wended her way.

They found her one morning still in her chair.

‘Twas a sight that made their blood freeze.

A smile on her face, light shone through her hair.

Held in her hand was a freshly picked rose.
