Stanley walked into the room
The sweat was dripping from his brow.
Thankful for his air-con home
It was time to have beer ‘bout now.
He'd been outside with his pride and joy
He’d washed and polished the car
It was his mistress, his favorite toy.
The fastest thing on the road by far.
Now Stanley is a Holden man
He had loved the General all his life
At Bathurst, he was the number one fan
Jeering the Ford fans,always in strife.
As he sat there dreaming, drinking his beer.
His wife Maria entered the room.
The smile on her face soon cooled his cheer
Smiled as she kissed him,then dropped the bomb.
“Stanley you know that the children are growing
In a month, they will all be going to School.
The problem is, how far they are going
They will have to be driven the car is too small."
Stanley broke out into a sweat.
He knew the next thing she would say.
Sell the car and buy a Bus? Her mind was set.
His pride and joy, his love? No way!
They fought and argued through the night
Finally reaching a compromise
He would change the car, if he could have a bike.
Maria was happy, she had won the prize.
She told her Papa what Stan had said
Mama was happy she was over the moon
Like a lamb to slaughter her Stan she had led
Plans were made to buy a bus real soon.
Saturday morning they did the deed
Traded the Holden for an nine seater bus
Poor Stanley looked like his heart would bleed
Driving home, others left him in their dust.
The Family met him at the door.
They inspected the Bus from nose to tail
Vinyl seats, thick carpet on the floor
Maria smiled, her pleadings never failed.
The very next day she turned to Stan
Said “When will you buy your Bicycle dear”
You should get one soon as you can.
He smiled, “it’s out in the shed my dear.”
“Think I’ll have a little ride, get used to how it’s done
I’ll need to ride well to get to work
You never know it might be fun.
She smiled at the thought of him pedaling to work.
Maria screamed, dropped plates on the floor,
Wondered what that sound could be
From the shed there came a mighty roar
As Stanley roared out, on his shiny H.D.
