Five two pound bag of sugar two loaves French bread, one loaf of Wonder, one pound of butter, one small tub margarine, olives, (maybe next week) one chuck roast one pound of cheap burger, don’t really need meat. one dozen eggs got two left from last week, a pound of bacon next paycheck, one bag rice still have two cups five pounds French Roast three pound can of Folgers two pound can generic one three ounce jar of instant. What do I have so far…? coffee, and toast with margarine, I wonder… if I skip the sugar I can put gas in the car.
This is so neat, Carmen - and wry!! A touch of the Groucho Marx about it... my maths is appalling but I think, working it out very roughly, petrol is over $7 a gallon here in the UK - much of it being burned up in traffic queues on our over-congested roads in town and country. A sobering reflection of modern life that it is more imperative to keep the car running than to be adequately fed or sheltered, somehow... and to have a mobile phone; communication is everything these days. Very well crafted write that adequately expresses a choice that most of our seniors in this country are faced with, every single day. It is sad but a fact of life, I guess. Some things never stay the same. I miss the old days of cheap gas!!

Cleverly crafted slice of life. Unfortunately, I tried putting sugar in the car once. I could be accused of being a bit too experimental? Naive? Impulsive? Desperate?
This reminds me ... I forgot to buy peanut butter again.
i liked this very much. reminded me of when i was going to college, a single parent with kids 1 and 2 years of age. gas was such a premium, no matter what the price, and living in the city, i used to hate using the gas it took to move my car from one side of the street to the other during the winter parking restrictions. the less i used, the car, the better, and things were so "tight" that even moving it from one side of the street to the other, and searching for a spot was too much. ---and i do love "lists" of any kind ...:)
Oh geez, I can relate so well to this. We actually have to sit down and make the list, then cross off things one by one to make it fit the budget. Yikes! Great look at the lean life...
Laughing... sorta. A few days ago, I noticed that the price had dropped about ten cents per gallon and panicked, believing I needed to get gas urgently, before the price went back up. That's pretty bad considering the price was still ludicrous. Enjoyed this write, Carmen.
