The old fashioned big heavy key is resting in the lock with three quarters of it sticking out horizontally. The key is made of brass but it looks like gold. Nothing holds it there. The key cannot turn itself to the left or to the right. I thought I caught it out of the corner of my right eye moving, turning, tantalizing me but when I looked over at it, it was not moving. The key beckons and if a key could talk I imagine it saying: "Turn me. Just simply turn me. Place your thumb and forefinger around me and simply turn me to the right to lock or to the left to unlock. Which is it that you want to do? Which is it that would be most beneficial to your life? Which is it that will protect or release that which needs releasing or protecting?" I cannot look at the key now without thinking all of those things. I cannot look at the key now without asking all of those questions.
I thought you'd picked the wrong genre for this until I read it. You have created a nice mystery that be quite a thriller as a short story like the famous one about opening three doors. If the key turns by itself we are talking about the supernatural. If the key is turning in your mind, it is psychological. If the key presents a conundrum, it is philosophical.
