Hog-Killing Day

Daddy sure got us outta bed early this mornin’

Cause today we gonna kill us a big ol’ fat hog

Philip he gits to shoot it cause it’s his to kill

Daddy had him feed it slop and corn twice a day

I’m glad Mother fixes us biscuits an gravy to eat

Instead-a slop like that poor ol’ hog had everday

Man alive it’s really cold out here this mornin’

Ever time I breathe out looks like I’m smokin’

Kenneth an Philip they lets me have a puff sometimes

An it don’t make me sick an throw up like it use to

They always smoke that tabaccer Daddy raises

But it burns my mouth an use to make me sick

Uh-oh here comes Kenneth ridin' his bicycle

You’d better watch where you’re goin’ burr-head

An you know what I’m gonna do Kenneth Gerald

I’m gonna tell Mother you out here ridin’yer bicycle

With yer feet up on the handlebars again

An I’ll betcha she cuts yer hide with a willer switch

You tell an I’ll make sure I tell her you been smokin’

Hey David go back in the house an git Daddy’s .22

You go git it yerself Philip . . . I ain’t yer slave anymore

Daddy will you make David go back an git yer rifle

David Lee do what he said an you two quit yer fussin'

Man alive that was the loudest whistle I ever heered

I wish I could stick my little fangers in my mouth

An whistle real loud the way Daddy jist done

Now I hear him a-hollering’ fer us

C’mon boys . . . No more o’ yer fussin’ this mornin'

We got us a big ol’ fat hog to kill

Now that Philip's twelve he gits to do the shootin'

Kenneth got to shoot one the year he turned twelve

An David in three more years you'll pull the trigger

What a day that was! Filled with sibling rivalry and coming of age experience. I think you nailed the way you talked at that time very well.

Those that go to grocery stores to pick out their favorite cut of pork from factory produced pigs have no idea what it was like to grow your own meat, kill it, cut it up, preserve it, and make it last for as long as possible until you have to kill the next one.

Leaving a free line between every once in a while would make it a bit easier to read with my wandering attention and slow reading style.

Bonjour David Lee Thompson ! A nice enough skit on gun-craziness. It's also clear why after your Vietnam experience (and the loss of your brother there) you would want to downplay the efforts of the NRA lobby. Likewise the pig is the symbol of War and its spoils, I take it. If I might be so bold as to ask: "Does your father then stand for the War-monger as a prototype? Or are you merely stating the case as a matter of a people who historically usurped a continent by decimating the original settlers by the gun?

I should think the second possibility. Bravo !!!
