Across the miles, the spinning wheels-
The need to focus, how it feels-
The houses, trees, the lights, a blur,
I’m trying not to think of her.
A red light makes me have to wait-
I close my eyes and see her, fate-
She’s everywhere I try to look-
Silly, thought I’d closed the book.
Mountains in the distance, tease-
Will I ever get there? Please?
Watch the road, the lines fly by-
Strangers shouldn’t make me cry.
Hear her voice, like yesterday-
Listen to a CD play-
Wishing she was next to me-
Heaven help me, it can’t be.
Traffic signals, signs and turns-
God- the way my heart just yearns;
Most must settle for much less,
Beg one moment’s sweet caress.
Silly dreams, the sirens blare-
An accident must be somewhere,
Like dreams, the flashing lights are brief,
But I can never get relief.
Focus on the road somehow-
Journeys end, but please- not now;
All of life- to give her smiles-
Now and then, across the miles.
John, this is not only a brilliant poem, it's a poem from the soul of one who has know love's yearning. Just beautiful, touched me deeply. I love your poetry.
What a great poem! Brought back feelings of all those times I drove so far only to be disappointed when she didn't show up or wouldn't have me in her life anymore and I just drove like a blind man oblivious to lights passing in the night like you described so well.
Join me as we travel together on the road called "Aging." I will be sharing my personal experiences with you and offer ideas on how we can better navigate the complex byways of our older years. Grief, healing, generations, ancestors, and more.
Kudos, poet!
