Light of the Sky
by John Herlihy
Darkness made way
For the light of day.
From darkened shadow,
A rhythmic, pulsating glow.
Light on the lip of sky,
The night ready to die.
Mercy found in the hour—
Inside the bud, a flower.
Light upon earth’s face,
Beads of dew as grace
On blades of grass felt,
As the drops gently melt.
Light at the sky gate,
Patience in the wait.
Now, through the sun door,
Earth’s surface to explore.
Light into the sky shining,
Beads of light the world defining.
White light makes its claim,
Blue color left behind as stain.
Light in the sky filled,
The heart of the sky stilled.
Hues no one can imagine,
Shadows no one can fathom.
Sky light where it belongs,
Singing its roster of daily songs.
Under this azure awning of blue,
Our tender hearts to woo.
The light virtually is the sky—
Horizon to horizon on high.
The sky nothing but sheer light;
Birdsong sings the passing of night.
Light beyond the sky draws near,
To dispel all latent, hidden fear.
Light on light—such mystery.
This lantern of light—such beauty.
