It Takes Courage to Believe
by John Herlihy
Sometimes – unexpected,
It seems hopeless to believe.
To no longer feel protected,
As if belief there to deceive.
It takes courage to believe,
Courage will never deceive.
What is courage but power,
To meet the moment’s hour.
All the love that I ever had
Contained within the belief.
By courage and power see
The abiding truth of reality.
The coward who disbelieves,
Who believes nothing at all.
Such nothingness deceives,
A coward drinks bitter gall.
In the heart of belief lies love,
As in the flower’s heart nectar.
Love soars on wings of the dove,
In heaven’s dome our protector.
The simple soul appreciates faith,
Their act of will flows forth pure.
What else cling to but abiding faith,
Thru all life’s vicissitudes to endure.
The one Lord my only true guide.
Wherever else can I possibly turn?
From Him I can nothing at all hide,
My heart weeps, my desires burn.
May my poems testify to my belief,
Proof that the Creator does exist.
The sole presence who offers relief,
Courageous faith to lovingly persist.
