A man cares for his ill wife

Poem Artwork

He lays out her clothes, morning and night
He cooks healthy meals, though time is tight.
He tells her the date, and the day of the week
Looking for that spark that he’ll always seek.

He takes out the dog, part of the day
Then off to work, alone she will stay.
First chance he gets, he calls home to ask
How she is doing, and reminds her of tasks.

Sometimes he will ask, “What is my name?”
And still her answer remains the same.
“And what am I to you?” he ups the game
Sometimes no answer, the illness to blame.

But he gently reminds her again and again
To keep her off medicines as long as he can.
“How long now?” I ask him, “since the start.”
“Three years,” he answers, “when she started to part.”

He makes reservations for a special night
Hoping again she will see the light.
And remember the day when two became one
Before her mind began to come undone.

And then again the next day he takes up the job
Does what he can, does he ever just sob?
And once again he will do all he can
And we look at him and think
Wow! What A Man

A most meaningful and heartfelt offering, Lark. I can only imagine what it would be like to go through this. I watched my father deteriorate over four years but he was in a hospital care facility so I was not looking after him like this man in your poem. Thank you for sharing. Love and best wishes to you,

Regis

Very touching. I had to take care of my Mom whjen she started to get dementia. Being a caregiver is no easy task. My Mom got so bad, I had to put her in a nursing home. That remains the hardest and most painful thing I've ever done. Your poem brought back many of those memories.
