My recent, unanticipated slide into homelessness prompted this set of poems exploring the various ways and extents to which we can know what we think we know, or would like to believe we do.

 Philobservations:

On What We Know When

True Belief Is Humble

Like every other word in every language
wherever written, whenever spoken
the word God is an approximation

Understood differently
according to a unique pattern of neurons
firing in each individual’s brain
entertaining its meaning

As fallible as the prehistoric brain
which first conceived a meaning
for its utterance, as fallible as
every human’s brain hearing it since

Faith requires humility
is not based on certainty, rather is a call
to believe that which cannot be proven

That must be discovered
through hypothesis and experimentation
within the individual laboratory
of each person’s life

We may share our formulas
as guidance or suggestion
but we cannot expect that others
will be able to replicate them

Each of us apprehends truth, what portion
of truth we are able to apprehend
using the formula discovered and refined
throughout the longitudinal study
we live here on Earth

A partial truth which contributes, nonetheless
to whatever whole toward which all are travelling

Disclaimer

What each of us knows with greatest certainty
is nonetheless approximate and temporal
perceived by a mind with human limitations
from an ever-changing perspective, aging
through time, traveling an uncertain course

Within Recognized Limits

Forever isn’t real
nor is yesterday, anymore

Remembering cannot replicate
Replication never really replicates, either

We always know less than we know
Knowing this, we can accomplish more

What’s Certain

Very little of what we know
is learned in the moment

Knowledge is a body of learning
resurrected from our pasts
from which we construct support
for new perceptions

Memory is faulty, devious
always in some way self-serving

This we know

Evolution Redux

Sleep is the ocean
from which our thoughts crawl
each morning into light

To which each evening
they return to walk along the shore

then wade in to be carried away
by the subconscious undertow

From which one night’s night
they will not escape

and perhaps, if gifted with peace
will not even try

Erosion

As a river’s flow wears
through rock and soil
to reach the sea

So time flows
through our lives

So time flows
through all life

6/14/2018

Subjective Ease

What we see as flowing
is to the stream a struggle

Against soil, sand, pebbles, rocks
huge boulders, to reach the sea

only to be picked up, and carried away
back to the beginning, then set down
to repeat the downhill battle yet again

Aphorism (for Nathaniel Turner)

Follow the path of the most kindness
and purpose will follow you

Follow the path of the most justice
and power will precede you

From Joshua to Revelations

The end of the world is over and done
is happening now, is coming soon…er
or later; exact timing relies on perceptions

affected by the moods of the perceivers
perceiving physics and metaphysics
beyond their abilities to comprehend

Limitations of Language

Regardless of how weighty the thoughts be
that they convey, or what gravitas they carry

words alone can never stop the wind from blowing
quickly away the paper on which they’re written

Living The Dreamy Life

Something I dreamt last night made sense

I don’t remember the dream, or dreams, any dreams
or the thing in the dream, or dreams, that made sense

It may not have made sense. I may have dreamt that

I’m describing how I experience life now, if that now
makes sense. Did it ever? I live in dreams I can’t recall

An Eternal Existential Puzzle

between never and forever is
now is both in no time is there
everywhere and nowhere I am
never and forever I am there
here and now in the never was
beginning forever at the end
of never is now will be beginning
at the end of never I am now
back to the beginning, repeat

Reincarnation Continuum

Then and now and then is always
but as always, now is hardly ever
because as soon as now is now
it becomes then, so those living
in the now are practically extinct
which is why they keep returning

I'm glad you took the time to write these poetic words of wisdom over the last few months. Other poetry here could learn a thing or two from your observations so well thought out.

We are like specs of dust in the universe. We are so small, and yet we feel so big.

None of us walks the same path as another, the experience and lessons gathered are not the same. Our beliefs aren't either, but we love to share them.

Forever is a word, and so is never. There is no past, no present, and no future. These are just given names. We live for the moment when we wake up and God grant us another day. When it's time for us to leave this world, we will travel to another place which we think will be of eternity, but the only thing eternal is our soul, which will continue its journey.

Future: The Spiritual Story of Humanity by Glenn Martin

Histories of the world are generally written to either celebrate technology and science, or to herald doom. My book examines the path of the spirit in the onward rush.
