America is too great for homelessness and poverty to cripple the spirits of its citizens.

Only Death Could Cure My Hunger

Each day I push

my cart as my hunger

grows, will I live to see

another day,

heaven knows.

My feet hurt from

walking long ways,

got holes in my

clothes and shoes

the homeless shelters

are full,

no room for me to stay.

As I scramble

for food, I beg

a lot, others look at

me with pity

as if I deserve my

misery.

In the cold

I pray for death before

The new day

What would I do

For a spared meal

I swear my hunger pangs

are real.

Only Death Could Cure My Hunger

Only Death Could Cure My Hunger

I said

Only Death Could Cure My Hunger

Dead, I wouldn’t have

to beg, or wonder

where am I going to lay

my head,

in death I’ll be free

no more begging

for currency.

However, I have to

work it out here, ever

imagine a person sleep

with their hand extended

wake up and no money

and their hands still

hungry?

The reality behind what people see. Living on the street is not free. It is hunger and cold, a burning sun and great thirst. It is no one offering any help when it is sorely needed. You are right in penning that sometimes, death would be better than life like this.

So powerful, so real, so well said. It took honesty, courage,
and a lot of heart to pen these words. Keep the faith.

The New Debtors' Prison by Paul Lonardo

While Debtors prisons no longer exist, many people continue to be persecuted for crimes related to poverty or inability to repay money owed to municipalities. This practice remains in an injustice that needs to be rectified.
