Earthly Urn

by Dadfire — Read all 70 poems by Dadfire

( I have to write a dark poem once in a while to offset my mindless humor poems, this is similar to my poem,
What Is Man, if you want to check it out)

Poem Artwork

 Earthly Urn

Oh soul of man
what evil lurks
to maim the day
from day of birth

we sound of cries
and live to die
won't look the other
in the eye

we cut the branch
then crush the bones
and burn and bury
and stay alone

we sew a path
we cut the cord
and in the pain
still want for more

our dark is long
that waits for light
but day won't stay
it's killed by night

for fear indeed
has closed the door
the key was thrown
that locked the door

will light appear
to expose the wrong
that's writ' by man's
most human song

the fire is lit
the heat is strong
there's no escape
this earthly urn

shall there remain
forever more
the ash of man
to rise no more

Thanks for the comments. In a few billion years our Sun will become a red giant and burn up all that is on and of the earth anyway, truly turning it into an urn. The Sun will eventually do the job of what man is trying to do to each other now anyway. So the Sun will finish the job if we haven't done it by then! So maybe man turning all to ash now and what happens to earth in the future is just nature having it's way. Good ole mother nature!

Well I don't see you putting this one to music, but Ralph Stanley had a big hit with "Oh Death".
It does bring thoughts to mind. Some painful some remorseful and some about an afterlife as well.

A very thoughtful and well written poem.

Great poem....Sometime you have to write a few dark or sad poems....In my EBook of poetry "Sunrise Roses" there are a couple of deep, sad poems....2 of which I tinkered with for 5 years because when I originally wrote them....They were both tear jerkers....So I had to lighten both of them up a bit....

"Ashes to ashes, dust to dust." A poignant reminder that regardless of how important we think our lives, in the end we all go back to that urn that is our source, mother Earth.

Death is a reality that we cannot escape. An interesting poem that explores the darker side. John
