A fish tale dedicated to my niece Kyndall, who requested I write a poem about a one-eyed fish.

A One-Eyed Fish With Fin-Like Feet

I went fishing one morning down at the creek
took my fishing pole and something to eat
I sat by a tree and tossed out a line
hoping to catch a big fish this time

I sat there waiting 'till almost noon
began to get hungry so I ate my food
I leaned on the tree and lowered my cap
decided to take me a little nap

I awoke to a noise and to my surprise
saw my pole bent over about broke in half
I grabbed my pole with all my might
to keep this monster from winning the fight

the battle went on for quite some time
couldn't wait to see what was on my line
finally pulled him in but what did I see
but a one-eyed fish with fin-like feet

I thought for awhile, what should I do?
this fish most certainly belongs in a zoo
it's one of a kind, a creature so rare
that people would pay to see it there

all of a sudden he began to speak
this one-eyed fish with fin-like feet
he said he was over a thousand years old
and would grant me a wish if I let him go

I said you're a fish, what can you do?
He said, "I have more power, more than all of you.
Now let me go, see what I can do,
if you want that wish I can grant to you"

I thought to keep such a prize I caught
to show everyone a fish that talked
but the deal he offered, I could not refuse
one wish to be granted, how could I lose

he told me to hurry, for only so long
could he be out of water, which was his home
I couldn't decide and he was looking weak
the one-eyed fish with fin-like feet

he said it was time, to make my wish known
for back to the water, he had to go
"So tell me now. What wish you seek?"
said the one-eyed fish with fin-like feet

I began to speak but then instead
felt the cold, pouring rain upon my head
and was sad to know, it was just a dream
of a One-Eyed fish with Fin-Like feet

It may have been a dream, but it certainly was an imaginative one. In the story while poetic, was right down the alley of the young girl who asked for it. You are a great storyteller, Uncle Dan.

Aren't children so inspiring? They remind us that it's ok to dream and imagine. I really enjoyed this piece :)

What a wonderful tale, wonderful rhythm, and great rhyme throughout. You may have written it for a four-year-old, but this seventy-three-year-old enjoyed it immensely. I'm sure Kendall was spellbound by it.

I haven't been writing many poems lately. I have been engrossed in attempting to write my first book. My 4 year old niece was visiting and while we both were fishing, she joked about catching a one-eyed fish. I told her I would write a poem or song about it, just for her.
Thanks for the inspiration, Kyndall!
