Don't Dare Knock My Paper Plates

A quirky write on dealing with picky in-laws

Poem Artwork

Don't Dare Knock My Paper Plates

now one fine meal I had prepared
when in-laws came from out of town
who love to talk of things they hate
but please don't knock my paper plates

paper plates are awesome things
without them life is not the same
listen now and I'll explain
so not to think that I'm insane

they're much maligned without a cause
by fancy folk that flap their jaws
to brag about their fancy wares
they have to treat with upmost care

for once they break a plate or two
they spend their whole night crying through
upset to know they must replace
those special ordered fancy plates

they ask me why, why use those things
they're flimsy and spill everything
with tortured looks upon their face
they stared at mine with such disgrace

I said my plates though paper be
they do the job just fine for me
can stack a hundred all in place
go try that with your fancy plates

the microwave, it loves them too
won't burn my hand when heating's through
can use them for the cover too
so not to spill your warmed up stew

and think of all the hours spent
you scrub and scrape and wash and rinse
those fancy plates again and again
while I'm happy napping in my den

so they began to accept their fate
and forget about their fancy plates
to now accept their appointed lot
and eat their stew that's thick and hot

then I held up, red and white
to ask which wine they want tonight
I said, now take a lovely sup
as I poured into their,
paper cup

I absolutely HATE paper plates, cups, except when there is beer in them. Heh.Heh

Daniel, from start to finish, this poem was a blast. The rhythm is perfect, and I would love to hear it with bluegrass accompaniment and western clad cloggers clippety-clomping on a hardwood floor. I think it would work, don’t you?

Typical bachelor fare. It was cute, especially the last line, but I beg to differ on two counts:

First, my work was mostly head work at the desk all day. When I got home, I enjoyed cooking fresh (not heating canned stew unless I was really tired) food on the stove while I watched the news on TV. And then always quickly wash my dishes immediately after put them away or rinsed them and put them in the dishwasher. My guests were never put off by eating from my plastic or melamine plates. My wineglasses were glass and my silverware was stainless. Washing dishes was relaxing.

Second, one time I attended a national conference with huge attendance. We ate lunch in a gymnasium turned into a cafeteria. Holding my paper plate out with my paralyzed arms and hands, volunteers dumped sloppy food piled high on it. As I left the end of the table line, the paper plate folded in the center and hit the floor with a mighty splat. Someone rushed in to help me and told me to go get another plate… They would clean it up. Embarrassed, I got a double plate the second time with much less food on it.

Jane, no prime rib. I would have had to get out my plastic knives for that, LOL! I served my in-laws that warmed up stew. What a mess, huh! But at least it was thick and hot.

Paper plates and worse paper cups are the bane of the culinary world; yet you have a point, especially when it comes to in-laws. Enjoyed this immensely. Very inventive and amusing.

This was really cute, but I still don't like using paper plates, for the obvious reasons you presented. Plus I don't like to create more waste that goes into our landfills. It's reusable plastic for me.
