Back Home
I'm lying here awake, and it's half past four
my mind won't stop, it's like a swinging door
I can't stop thinkin' on the things I've done,
all the places I've been, all the people I've known
when my mind goes back to the place I was born
that special place that we call home
Back home..............Oh baby back home............
I know where I belong, when I'm back home
Well I been all around and I seen some things
but I think it's time to try to re-arrange
I always been runnin' to the finish line
but somehow somebody keeps a' movin' that line
then my mind goes back to the place I was born
that special place that we call home
Back home..............Oh baby back home..............
I know where I belong, when I'm back home
You can find old friends you ain't seen in years
they're so darn happy just to see you're still here
sittin' on the porch, spending your time
talking 'bout those good ol' times
when your mind goes back to the place you were born
that special place that we call home
Back home..............Oh baby back home..............
I know where I belong, when I'm back home
Well I think I'm going to stay a little longer this time
'cause they ain't no hurry gettin' back to the grind
my worries here, they seem to disappear
they leave my mind so free and clear
when my mind goes back to the place I was born
that special place that we call home
Back home...............Oh baby back home..............
I know where I belong, when I'm back home
Back home................Oh baby back home............
I know.... where I.... belong, (slower, long pause, hold note, stop)
when I'm......Back......Home..........(slow, deliberate, hold out note)
But this song has a great lyric and rhythm that will appeal to the country and western scene quite well. There are a number of "hometown" songs out there but they have a lot of appeal to those who grew up in one place and left with regrets.
Like you, I've been around and gone around to the point where I no longer have any real hometown. I'd be a stranger if I went back there except to maybe people my age who will remember me, like the time I stopped at a gas station in 2011, a few miles west of the little town I went to junior and senior high school in. The attendant got all excited and started talking about me, but I didn't know him from Adam. Perhaps a result of him knowing my father or my sister who still lives there.
