An encounter with one couple at my local park led to a series of thoughts I recorded in this poem.

Poem Artwork

I heard someone say,
something they might have done
would have been cool.
I thought they were silly,
then chided myself for judging them.

Consider the possibility: that
leading a life in denial or ignorance
is not the same as one lived in simplicity.
Although, it is where some may be
at that time in their life.
I can be ignorant in
my own way, in denial.

To hold both wisdom
and appreciation of simple pleasures
is the goal, is it not?
To become that wise fool
who laughs at themselves
and finds joy in simple things.

To wallow in self-pity over one’s “mere doings,”
is denial of another sort,
of one’s own greatness.

There are no rewards, no acknowledgment,
no accolades nor honors announced for
those who quietly till the soil of their lives,
led seemingly in obscurity.
To acknowledge, then,
to honor one’s own preference to live
outside the spotlight and
take joy in “something cool,”
is to know acceptance, not denial.

We all have our time to shine.
Those who seek to
notice the flower struggling in
the cracks of a sidewalk
may not know they are in that light.
They will only know “how cool” it is, that,
even in such stifled,
confining conditions,
the humblest of us can find
some bit of earth
in which to bloom.

I related to this as a person who has passed hasty judgment of others, while hating such when it happens to me. I have longed for a sense of accomplishment and greatness, while also feeling satisfied that I can now live the simple life, with less pressure and expense. Your poem is worth reading numerous times, and gives an opportunity for more reflection. Thanks for posting it!

Wise and beautiful thoughts that are so appropriate this time of year. I find your perceptions as experience has dictated, as the observation of both yourself and others have made purchase. You, indeed, have a plethora of wisdom and charity. Thank you for sharing.

Overflowing with wisdom. The simple life without reflecting can lead to feeling prejudice against others for no other reason than simple differences. But the simple life, fully reflecting on all life going on around, can result in some earthshaking conclusions.

I like your whole poem for its beauty, but the last three lines bring it to a wonderful conclusion.

A telling image, that speaks to me of the Creator's grand design. I sense hope threaded throughout this piece, and hope (IMO) is always a passion for the possible. Nature, in my life, has always been the greatest and most truthful teacher. Sadly, in this world, wherever there is a crowd, there is always untruth. A quietly introspective piece that can be read (and interpreted) several ways. Thanks for sharing. Happy holidays.

Wise and introspective are those who appreciate the simple pleasures in life and take notice of ordinary/extraordinary things.
