“Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.”

Carl Jung

...............................................................................

I remember so well

those childhood Halloween days

when we dressed up to thrill

as pirates, angels and zany thingies

Suzie and I

and the rest of the gang

we had such a fun loving time

trick or treat

and bobbing for apples

we played all those games

with sweet gay abandon

without a care or trouble

in the whole wide world

laughing and giggling

on every doorstep and corner

singing our songs

to get our supper

we grew up so fast

while the time just flew by

unnoticed by every eye

as we learned

all about ourselves

and the strange ways

of adults and all

I played the Pied Piper

for them all to see

charming the birds

right off the trees

winning the hearts

and affections of many

I gradually learned

how to hold my own

and somewhere along the way

I crossed the line

that seperates the boys

from the men

and never was I

the same again

something was gained

but oh something was lost

and I never could

quite make out what

and the best piece of advice

I ever did receive

was from an old man

reminiscing in a bar

" Son, ...Life has got its problems ,

you just got to live them through "

We were fearless, my brother and I. But thee was that guy who left his house dark and howled and moaned from his attic window--quite funny. And then that guy who gave us a handful of popcorn in each open bag.

I was always in the know and never afraid of anything except bad guys who tended to want to beat you up and take your stuff--was good at outrunning them.

And then I grew up and my buddies pulled some very bad tricks (no one was hurt).

Nice reminisce.

Almost seems like a movie when you try to look back behind that line, yet it lives way back in the dark, in the mind. Great piece!

Peter,

A delightful jaunt down Past Tense Lane...

Having had 2 brothers, 3 sons + 2 sons-in-law,
and 6[of my 8 grandchildren] grandsons, I was
especially attentive to the lines :
'and somewhere along the way
I crossed the line
that seperates the boys
from the men
and never was I
the same again'

I've seen it happen over and over again...and you have captured it with your incredible acumen.

Let's hear it for the Boys!

YOu are singing to my inner child Peter P, the one who never wants to grow up in some respects, but has no choice in others. Is it innocence with wisdom or wisdom in innocence, that gets us through?

Very wise words. We do lose our innocence when we grow up. I now realize I don't enjoy Christmas as much as I used to. Reminds me of a song that goes that when I was young Christmas trees were taller. Victor

"a man must never forget what it's like to look through the eyes of a child if he's to become a man" ...

a sincere poem with a potent message ... a man must learn through his own experience ... there is no better teacher ...

Superb memoir, and sage advice from the old man. A Chinese adage says"The only way to get to the end of something is to go all the way through it." Doesn't sound like much until you stop and think about it.We like to take short cuts and it never works.

I have a friend at work every day he tells me this "Life is good as long as you never grow old." Your poem reminded me of him tonight.... But you can capture some by being child like within. This had a great lessons about lost innocence of childhood. Thank you for many reasons with this one Peter.......

Joselyn

"Crossing that line" you give us all the thoughts that came to us when we....when we...grew and lost the child. For you and me and many poets we still have that special awe that writes the poems of youth. You have painted the kid in me too.

The moral of this poem is stated so well in the last thought. It is, indeed, quite true, Peter, that we all much trudge through the bad in life. Having a good outlook, even in times of crisis is critical to one's success. Very sage advice, wrapped so timely in this poem. Isn't it amazing how a few added years on the old calendar can really serve to enlighten a soul? Well done!

Wise&Sad!Yet even girls would like it back then; but with a child's mind-eye, God will let you be as He said, "let the children come unto me and forsake them not..." God's grace gives us the balance to be...

Sir Peter ...

It was those abundance of "zany thingies" that ruined me. My parents never bought costumes - we had to invent them.

For me it was: "If you can't take another step son, and have to sit down and rest, then everyone behind you will pass you by."

You remind me of bygone days Peter and all the foolishness we perpetrated that we thought was OK. And all the lessons we learned and yes ... that doorway we went through where we left our youth behind.

"Lookum in the eye," my dad said, "if you can shake their hand, so be it, if you have to spit, so be it. Since I thought spitting was a waste of time I punched instead.

Light and Wisdom ...

Guisin' holds treasured memories for me too, Peter. With face blackened with soot from the fireplace, and my Dad's pit helmet on, I'd go off with my pals to sing or recite on the doorstep for a tanner (couple of cents), or an apple, orange or peanuts.
Fun, Peter Pan days these were until we started sprouting the bum fluff and were able to sing Wandering Star like Lee Marvin. That's also when we started to climb those damn walls and cross over many bridges. We didn't need no giggling Dali Lami to tell us what the wiser old man told you, but our instincts also gave us the same advice.
Thanks for the trip back, Peter, and reminder.

Oh Peter... there is a part of me that is nodding and saying how true this is.. and then there is that other part of me who sheds a tear or two for the innocence lost that enables us to understand your final words... I hope that made sense.) An awesome piece of writing here.. Hugs and a weepy smile, Myrna
