We live in an era of universal surveillance, everything we do is monitored by technology, the better to target us for advertizing campaigns. It is called The Internet Of Things, and it is no friend of freedom.
A scanning camera's watchful eye
reords and stores the details of your life
and filtered data yields keywords
from which behaviour traits emerge.
The database and digital spy,
your companions, from birth until you die
Gadgets betray your confidences,
appliances expose your preferences,
even the packaging on your sandwich
and the stuff stored in your fridge
are in a conspiracy to reveal
your innermost feelings about your meal.
Ecce homo, our forebears said.
If not free then better dead.
But we, better nourished, better educated,
in the end amount to nothing more
than the data we have generated.
In the internet of things
we are only consumers born to serve
the gods that civilisation brings.
