Paper Bridges ...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Something off the beaten path.

Friday, March 25, 2011

Poem Artwork
For thee to force thyself upon them on the prow of early fortitude
To recline in jaded stories told like fabric stretched upon the loom

Moreover, not that I should care for streams in rivulets divide
What was once a dream of castles now fades in eventide

Alas, upon those shores I lay a stone of fond remembrance
Those times when eagerly we strove up paths of youthful merriment

On paper bridges now we strive in somber sonnets din
Ere, what was once the mandrakes tine now resides in fate and whim

I love everything about this. It feels classical and all at once universally and always relevant. It reminds me of a quote from a favorite movie - it went something like, "...my dreams, they didn't work out, but I'm glad I had them." Your "Alas, upon those shores I lay a stone of fond remembrance" makes me believe the subject has given dreams-gone-by the "okay" to rest in peace. Youthful merriment may not always manifest as we'd like, but it was youthful merriment, nonetheless - inherently valuable.

I agree with Phyllis. You have some great lines in this poem, Richard. My favorite is the simile about the fabric. Nicely penned. Love and hugs,
Sheila

So much to admire in these few short lines.

"fabric stretched upon the loom" "streams in rivulets divide"

"strove up paths of youthful merriment" +++++

Encore! ENCORE!! :)

there is indeed the anxiety of crossing a over paper bridge until we reach the other side, then recounting how far we traveled without totally falling ...
excellently penned images ...

Profoundly prophetic. So much of what we think is profound, is merely paper in the wind. Thanks for reminding us.

Form and language choices certainly different, Richard,
but perfectly appropriate in that 'earlier' way of expressing
for the theme in hand; i'm in love with
"...what was once the mandrakes tine now resides in fate and whim"
in another state and place we can no longer be certain of.

Bold and worthwhile, poet.

So many are the dreams that we grow in our garden of youth and innocence, and so few are they that thrive to blossom and bear fruit.
So insightful! But while there is breath left in us there is always the hope, the dream!!!
So many blessings to you Richard,

makes me think of the attempt to buy a plane ticket to catch up to my youth. unfortunately, this for me is just not possible, or anyone else i suppose. so the years gently slip away and oftentimes i dream to recapture the zest and fire of early days only to find myself reliving these through writing or dream or daytime fancy. yes, on paper bridges we traverse the darkness (life) spanning worlds of light. excellent poetry!!

Richard, methinks you wield a bit of magic in this step
off the beaten patch. None moreso than this intriguing line:

To recline in jaded stories told like fabric stretched upon
the loom...

Beauty oozes from your pen today.
