Sunlight BURSTING upon Darkened Fields…

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

PORTRAYAL 31. For K.J. Remembering a gifted playwright/actress whose first marriage fizzled. As her mommy and daddy incessantly asserted, ending her marriage to an artsy type would release her from an errant hindrance to her treasured stage career.

Poem Artwork
Being married to
a dedicated artsy type
was unglamorous for them,
and especially for those in the
daughters hoity-toity inner circle-
a brood of lah-di-dah dipwads finding
bliss in make-believe characters
.
But when
a child came,
being wedded
became far too real,
beyond any stage role… Now,
instead of acting's rigid discipline,
her life was becoming more like
swirling shadows and mists,
darting visions of beauty,
boring reruns of crying
and pooping,
disfigurements,
clefts and curves,
jasmine and nettles,
hope evoked and fading,
and all of it now a mirthless plod
of routines, methodical and monotone,
.
and each day,
her gloomy heart cast
feelings as dice along frayed felt…
.
Despite her parents’
disgust with her husband’s
blunt charm, a desire for
wholeness was ever
engrained in her,
even after their spirited divorce,
when she snapped, and hacked off
her mermaid hair, sobbing despairingly
until both lungs hiccuped for air…
.
But as it is in life….
prideful self-centeredness
remains undeterred…
.
And when at last
a persuader appeared,
and allowed what was
unrequited in her
to gaze into a
pregnant flame of possibilities,
something burst within her loins,
as he plunged a crystal key deeply
into her vanity of isolation…
.
Freed from inhibitions,
she gasped in sheer delight, and
released her soul to loves ephemeral burn…
.
Mixing the colors of quality bold, Paragon
revived her emptiness, and with lavishing strokes,
reprogrammed her like an ocean tide washes the sand…
.
Together now,
reaching new summits,
his exacting example sated
her despondency,
and with the
greatest of zeal,
she released all those things
methodical and monotone, and became
as Sunlight BURSTING upon darkened fields…
.

The PORTRAYAL SERIES. Poetic insights concerning immediate family and past friends (alive or dead). They will also address some of the actors, artists, musicians, and writers I associated with, or worked with, in college, or professionally. All of these individuals were influential (in one way or another) in shaping the man I’ve become today.

A wonderful portrait. She seemed to I've been hemmed in by her parents, her friends and her husband. Thankfully, she found a way out through a very good friend counselor.

I love the simile used to describe her bursting into the light.
