With You … Without You

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

PORTRAYAL 40. For MEC. My wife, best friend, fellow dreamer, and gifted photographer. You have helped me (us) navigate through some of the toughest, mind-bending, drag you over the rocks, challenging seasons in my (our) life. Thank you. Now, as we face our greatest challenge yet, I am convinced that complete healing comes to those who hope and pray and steadfastly press forward together in faith. Poem Artwork
WITH YOU… I have grown fond
of two living their lives as one
.
WITHOUT YOU… I resemble a
floundering vessel with torn sails
.
WITH YOU… I have soundness of
mind to bear up under the weight
of unenlightened popular opinion
.
WITHOUT YOU… my world is an
echo, dissonant, cold, and uninviting
.
WITH YOU… I find that nothing matters
but two willing hearts working together
to accomplish unique visions
.
WITHOUT YOU… the subtle leaven of pop
modernism weaves its way into the workings
of my restless imagination
.
WITH YOU… I understand the secrets of flying
through the forest without bumping into the trees
.
WITHOUT YOU… I become a clanging sound –
brash and one dimensional – slogging clumsily,
I write words lacking life
.
WITH YOU… I am whole; the wild seed that
becomes the field of uniquely vibrant flowers
.
WITHOUT YOU… I dither in the horse latitudes…
Resembling the aberrant colorless blossoms of a false
spring: I become a distorted reflection in a carnival mirror
.
WITH YOU… I walk the edge of the razor and never bleed.
I face the greatest challenges and remain strong.
I become the body of water between
incoming and outgoing rivers,
revitalized and pure,
reflecting all
that is good and
beautiful around it.
.
WITH YOU, I am completed and
become all that I am capable of being.
.
It is you, my love, who
confers to me all those singular
qualities that help define much of who I am.
Willingly imparting special gifts, you give me
the qualities that could never be birthed without you.

As your poem so thoroughly expresses, you and your wife have a bond that seems to weather any disturbances that might come your way. It suggests a relationship that has disapline, love, faith, and tenacity. I wish you both many more years of love and caring for eachother.

I'm glad that your father-in-law was a strong influence in your life and brought Michelle to you. An interesting politic way of expressing it.

Beh's father liked me enough to let her come to me and asked me to help him translate some poems from prisoners of the vietcong in the north into English. He was the father of 16 children. Ten of whom lived beyond childbirth and eight of whom came with him to the United States to start over. A noble, learned man.

I once wrote a poem with the exact same title: "With You, Without You", developed under a familiar, if not similar situation, with similar sentiments. This is beautifully done and rings as a bell of sincerity and gratitude. Fine work.
