That old "coal in your stocking" threat had me in its grip.

When Santa came to our house

he came in dark of night.

I heard boots upon the stairs

and shivered in my fright

Would he say that I was bad

would he holler and be mad

if he found me lying there awake?

I lay frozen in my bed

with my pillow on my head ~

Not a single wee sound did I make!

When the morning sun arose

I jumped up, grabbed my clothes

wondered if old Santa knew ~

if I had been “exposed”

Well, my mother said he told

her that I must have been cold

for my pillow was cov'ring my face

Then I knew I was Okay

Christmas gifts were here that day

I wouldn't spend Christmas in disgrace!

"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."      Proverbs 22:6

A great recollection and a positive affirmation of guilt. ;-)

I had to laugh at the irony expressed in this memory of Christmas past.

Wonderfully told.

On Christmas mornings,
we made lots of noise.
But back in my day,
we got more clothes than toys.

This made me chuckle, Connie. It looks like you got the write you were hoping for. Even as a little child I couldn't wrap my head around Santa. I always knew it was Dad and Mom. Hope you're feeling better. Happy Holidays. rlc

Ahhh . . . You told it right, because that was pretty much like how I thought in those early, innocent years.
