It might not say much about civilization, but many former luxuries are now considered necessities – at least to some. A study of households with annual incomes above $100,000 was recently commissioned by a nationally known advertising agency. The study showed that what just a few years ago were clearly novelties or luxuries have today become necessities of speed and convenience.

Vendors produce a lot of things in our lives not really needed,

Made part of society's fabric and then to us as "progress" meted.

"But who needs this stuff?" realistically a person retorts,

"Do we need to be barraged by helicopter traffic reports?"

And what about kitchen gadgets. We're talking trash compactor,

Which plays no role in anyone's life, not even remotely a factor.

To afford one of those things may cause our wallets to holler,

And for what? So our garbage can be made a little bit smaller?

Stores are packed with “stuff”. Lack of money can barely contain ya,

But not a word about environment and the effects of consumer mania.

The world's physical condition is what we're screwing up.

Does anyone know what to do with the ubiquitos styrofoam cup?

Wall to wall stereo as entertainment in automobiles?

Two grand of woofers and tweeters riding just above the wheels,

Different strokes for different folks, but I ask those of that ilk,

Do they need two grand of music, while getting a quart of milk?

A neighbor blowing off his sidewalk; Not one of my favorite joys,

With one of those damn blower things that makes all of that noise.

What is the purpose of that gadget?….(a purpose so ill starred),

'Cause all it does is blow his clippings over on my yard.

These mindless inventions thrust upon us with no real purpose

Are beginning to be viewed with an interest comatose.

We need cheaper, more important things to turn our lives to magic,

What ever happened to the 4 dollar 98 cent plastic Vegematic?

Frank, (Frankly) you're absolutely right. Unlike the Great Depression, when people really were deprived of necessities, Many of us, and that percentage is growing, have become addicted to shopping and buying just about anything that comes along. It's a sad state of affairs, but it will bring economy back. And then, our demise. ;-)
