You must be mistaken.
At sixty-three
I am not old;
My body may be
Less than whole,
But my mind,
With all its senses
And faculties,
Is all there.
It infuriates me
When I am spoken to
As if I am a child,
When I am made to feel
As if I belong
In a nursery for
The elderly.
Do not talk to me
Like a child!
Do not pat me
On the head and
Tell me something I did
Was “cute!”
Do not insult me
With your condescending
Smiles and verbal
Pats on the head.
I am not a child!
I haven't been one
In a long, long time.
I have a right to your respect
And I am demanding it.
But if you can't give it,
Then simply walk away,
And take your supercilious attitude
With you.
That's the way to vent it! It is infuriating when people mistake us for what we are. One of the best ways to thaw it is to have a humorous response that will throw the insulter for a loop.
It is interesting when I'm with the caregiver that people that we encounter tend to talk to my caregiver instead of me when it's my business that we are doing. But since my hearing, even with hearing aids, is starting to make it difficult, especially in noisy places at counters, to let my caregiver do the talking and then relay to me what's being said.
The best expression I ever heard from my roommates who really catered to me because I paid half the rent…"What's-a-matter! Ya crippled or somethin'!" At 29 and still an undergrad student, he was balding and looked 60.
