"A true friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.”
Walter Winchell
Growing up as I did
As a military brat,
And living
An emotionally transitory life
As an adult,
I have had many friends.
Most have come and gone
As I've moved from
Place to place, and
Job to job;
Some long since have become
Vague memories,
If not forgotten altogether,
While others have lingered,
Leaving warm smiles,
Some bittersweet with
What might have beens.
But there are those few,
Those precious few,
Who have remained
Through the years;
Who are privy to
Who I am
Deep inside,
Who've stood by me
When I wasn't worthy
Of their loyalty,
And forgiven me
My trespasses against them,.
For they saw things in me
That I hadn't seen myself.
They knew me
On an intimate level
That I didn't appreciate
Until I saw those things
Myself.
They were the rocks
And shoals
I didn't realize I
Was clinging to
As I struggled against
The raging waters
Of trauma and
Mental illness.
They did no less
Than help me
Stay alive
When I wanted to die.
I wish I could show them all
Just how grateful I am
And how much I love them,
Those who are still
With me,
And those who have
Passed.
I hope they never believe
I've squandered
The faith they've had
In me.
