I grew up in the country, woods all around
from the time I was five I could be found
walking olden paths of Indians and deer
songs of owls and frogs brought no fear
for I was one with them as I'd always been
walking familiar, wooded paths again
Trees so tall they reached the sky
lazy childhood days drifting by
echos of children, bronze and free
never alone for they played with me
in a dry river bed, arrowheads of flint
tokens of who they were, where they went
In cities or suburbs, no woods in which to play
but I still hear them calling, every day
“come home, come home, where you belong”
I will be there again before too long
we'll chase nimble foxes, climb tall trees
steal sweet honey from the honeybees
Then I will be home, home at long last
stepping from the present into the past
Your words bring back memories so sweet! I had two friends, Jimmy and Johnny, with whom I had many adventures in the two years we shared a neighborhood. Woods, fields, minnow ponds...I miss those days.
Once again I resonate so much with what you write. My home in West Virginia and the House I built outside of Atlanta were in the country, but I've seen much more wildlife in my suburban home because this area was wilderness until about 40 years ago. Wild critters still hang around but it's not like the forest.
I am going to continue to make an effort to drive a half hour to the local state park where there are a lot of animals and birds. But I never will feel like I did as a child often going off alone, leaving my brother, to just breathe in the ambience of the forest and its creatures. Fearing nothing there but often wondering about those that came before and their wandering lifestyle.
There is certainly the surface message in this, which I believe most can relate to. I sure did. But then, what is most intriguing to me, is the spiritual subtext (that I discern) that hints to me of our heavenly home, in a Kingdom not yet known. A fine thought-provoking piece. Thanks. Hope you're well. Peace... rlc
Causation resounds in this at times meloncholy longing and yet, present in your heart and mind to visit whenever you wish. We should all have such associations. I've lived in NYC, LA, Park City Utah and now in Talent Oregon where my home is situated against a running creek and park. So, I can relate well with your thoughts.
Trace a poem to its source. If that venture takes you to nooks and crannies and along streams of wonderment, where small animals scurry about, where sunlight glistens above the treetops, and you can feel the hand of God, stop and say "hello." You are in His/Her presence. And also say "hello" to LaBelle. She will be there.
Because we have an opportunity to choose our attitude and focus our intentions in the present moment, the world and our own personal lives are a reflection of our thoughts. It is our 360 degree review on how we think. Put simply, our job is to fully
