I think it can be no coincidence that you posted this on the 70th anniversary of the dreadful atomic bombing of Hiroshima; the language is hard-hitting and graphic yet overlaid with the material gloss of hubris and the transient vanities of our modern age. Can we ever be mere 'innocent bystanders'? And to what end if ultimately we are all just fuel for the fire? Can we yet hope for phoenix to arise when with every bomb that continues to be dropped on our world's citizens our own human face and potential for global good sizzles away like burning skin? We are all living in a Matrix environment, influenced by it while creating our own images. Idealism doesn't count, as no one knows what's good for themselves anymore than the person next to them know.
Is this about the destruction of humanity, the end of what we are, to move on to wherever it is we are going, burning in our own karmic fires...this is what I saw when this I read...I may be wrong for you but not for me...-e-
At times we create our stereotypes and see them grow bigger than the life around us, and gradually when we keep following the stereotypes we become part of the macrocosm. This poem is about emerging out of existential struggles surrounding us that trivialize complex and complicate the trivial.
I particularly like the image:

Properly somber for a day when the communal gag can be removed and our breath raised up in a bon-odori kind of shout to those ashen ancestors - well said.

I can't quite grasp your directive in this Jude, but I do see a lot of symbolism of the world that we have become and the slim chances remaining that we can reverse or even wade through the tidal wave of greed, sense of entitlement and destruction that is engulfing our people and our world.
Conjured up all sorts of images in this rather dystopian image of human (?) life on the planet. What I'm reading, appears to be an image of gradually sliding into a hotter hell of sorts than we are already in.
