I love to hike whether in the bosque of the Rio Grande, the mountains, or even the streets of Old Town.
Those around me hate it when I go alone but sometimes I just need some private time.
BUSTED.

A Stormy Escape

A single snowflake ends my climb

I must turn back to get to safety in time

I love my mountain yet hate the cold

And I must retreat before this storm unfolds

Hiking is good for body and mind

Had to get out, been feeling so confined

Though breathing is hard at 7000 feet

The burn in my lungs is so, so sweet

I don my poncho still two miles out

This storm is showing no signs of letup

Even good boots can’t grip the slimy clay

Having no footing is good reason to pray

Slipping and sliding and landing on my butt

Thankful when I finally see my old truck

Not even caring about sludge on the seats

The heater and mud tires are cherished treats

Heading toward the valley, I look back

The storm is clearing with minimal snowpack

A convenience store yields coffee and chili

Feeling good for a moment, my mind is free

But my yard contains cars of family and friends

Just thought they’d stop by on this lovely weekend

No hiding where I’ve been or what I’ve done

It’s obvious I’ve been hiking alone on my mountain

Going by myself will catch me grief

But I know their anger will be brief

With peace in my heart I flash a smile

Pouts, like the storm, will dissipate in a while

Raelynn there are times when we all feel the need to be alone and for most of us there is a special place to go where we can feel the ease. Stay safe and as Felix says carry a cell phone and don't push yourself.
There are a lot of us who think of you.

Very enjoyable poem; it conveys the step-by-step events of your retreat from the mountain and the anticipated scene on your arrival at home. I feel your reluctance to leave, but yet a caution that may have been a direct result of all the previous lectures you've received. When I was a teenager, I had the motto, "I'd rather be a chicken than a dead duck." It helped me to make wise decisions.
By the way, I'm glad you like to rhyme, too!

B U S T E D!!!!!!!!!! is right!

You know how much I like walking, and you didn't invite me. Yep, you were in trouble, but glad that it turned out perfectly for you.

I love you --- Kathy

:) And after the pout, comes the sun...LOL Enjoyed this one, I, too, love the mountains, RaeLynn. Lived in Salt Lake City, surrounded by four mountain ranges, loved to go hiking. Not too many mountains to hike in Texas...LOL Well done.

(((HUGS))), love and Merry Christmas, Karla.
