Innocent Friends
Innocence encountered
Confusing my mind
And it was so innocent
Just two friends passing time
Stretched out on that huge sofa
Laughing, fighting over the remote
This eve like so many before
Chuckles escaping my throat
Playing tug-of-war with the blanket
Knowing we’ll share it all along
Snowflakes falling and wind blowing
Staying the night a conclusion foregone
We settle in with the start of the movie
Comfortable, happy, and warm
A long week, a chance to relax
Protected, far from the storm
Aware I am beginning to doze
His breathing is even, too
Like so many other evenings shared
Sleep comes right on cue
It’s after midnight when I finally stir
In his arms contently I have curled
His warm hand on my tummy
I try to shake off my dream-world
As I stretch his arms tighten around me
“Don’t move,” a whisper I barely hear
Something has changed in the night
I lean against him, my mind still unclear
A soft kiss on the back of my head
Gentle nuzzles exploring my neck
Quiet pleas, “Please don’t leave”
Trying to keep my emotions in check
I lie back against him
Knowing his heart is so sincere
Wrapping my arms around his
Showing him I’m content here
There is no pressure, no demands
Just simple pleasures achieved
Warm and satisfied in his arms
Complex lives are weaved
Sleep comes so easily
Truly nothing has really changed
My friend again lies behind me
Only our affections are rearranged
We just don’t want to wake alone
And that battle’s set to be won
Drifting off, our needs will be met
Together as we greet the sun
Love you. God bless you. Kathy
