Heroic Friendship

Do you know that you’re a hero?

At least you are to me

You’ve never had to save my life

But a part of it you will always be

I’ve overlooked the little things

And even some not so small

Taking for granted the niceties

Until I take a fall

Last night the storm showed little mercy

In the flood and mud I led the way

You became my shining light

When suddenly my truck slid sideways

Mother Nature had the upper hand

As I blocked our only route

There was no animosity in your voice

Simply, “Don’t worry, we’ll get you out”

With half a dozen trucks behind me

Lordy, I wished I owned a jeep

But you rallied them all together

In mud more than ankle-deep

You orchestrated the extraction

And I made it to safe ground

No comments on my driving abilities

Just cheers all around

One by one the mud was traversed

With help, every vehicle got out

Standing in the rain, hot coffee in hand

Friendships had won out

I know when we look back

‘Woman drivers’ jokes will reign

Just remember you are my hero

As I pout and feign disdain
