Jackie do you belong to a religious cult ?
Jackie are you a lesbian ?
Jackie why did you cut your hair ?
I cut my hair
because I was tired of
frying
burning
cooking
crimping, chopping, cutting, curling
pulling
stretching
gelling
slicking
pinning
relaxing
perming
and spending
That's why I cut my hair.
I wrote this poem in 1994 and until this day people still ask me why I cut my hair

wear or hair the same way. Its amazing how
much stuff one has to go through, because
of how we choose to wear our hair. And
some sistahs can be very demanding at what
they think should be the way.
This is one of the reasons why we started
The Black Women's Hair site, a couple
of months ago. And it has really been
a very safe haven for us to go to.
Writing about hair, has helped us with
our healing process.
