Yes, there is a large proportion of society that doesn't care and doesn't act to make things better for the rest of the world. I'm not sure about deifying dog poop, but it is an interesting thought.

I just watched Crazy Rich Asians and found that the whole movie was about the uncaring excess that wealthy people do in their wealthy enclaves like Singapore where the poor are conveniently hidden away but still used by the rich for their comforts.
