This is simply a poem about Christmas.

by Jim Dunlap

I wake and pulling back the curtain,
See a fairyland of drifted snow;
And, with nostalgia, feel a certain
Yen for Christmases of long ago.
Remembering those happy hours
Spent decorating Christmas trees,
Snow castles, like crenellated towers,
And shoppers darting round like bees;
Past memories invade my thoughts --
With cherished faces, gone forever!
While mugs of cider -- warming draughts --
Embellish each festive endeavor.
I loved the most the Christmas lights,
Holly, wreaths, and mistletoe;
And see the past through fancies flights
In memories of long ago.
But still the best that Christmas gives --
And thinking on it, you'll agree --
Is pointing out that each still lives
In heart, and soul, and memory.

Lovely, y e s. Though many of us have mixed emotions about
holidays -- particularly Christmas -- , few of us would wish
the holiday away. And yes, those who truly love one another
live forever in all but the strictest sense. Happy

This well-structured poem is like the Star of Bethlehem, pointing us in the right direction to discover again the true meaning of life and Christmas. It has always been there, but sadly we are lost largely in too much tinsel and stress to notice! Thank you for this timely reminder that perhaps we do have to stop to really get our priorities right, and to cherish community and love above all else... things that otherwise fall into the very fast flow of life's turbulent stream. Cider at Christmas is new to me - but can understand it's warming appeal! Can just smell all that spice... TY Kate x

A lovely poem to savour during this season. This was sillfully written with superb rhyme and meter. I often find that those that have great technical skill and are sticklers for rules often lack originality and lose something in the visual aspects of their poetry (my opinion only). You don't seem to have this problem. Great talent!
With respect... Chanti

Those were the days. If we could all have a childlike giving spirit, the world and our neighborhoods would be SO much better off. Thanks for stopping by my neck of the den JD.

I like Christmas, not the parts about commercialism, but the parts about Peace on Earth, and Goodwill toward Men. That's what Christmas means to me, also the parts about giving. Somehow I believe the focus these days is on "receiving". Christmas reminds us of what it SHOULD be like 365 days a year--366 days on leap years.

This reminds me of many Christmasses ago when I was just a young calf. It made me very nostalgic and sentimental and you have captured the joy of those perfect holidays that are in my memory.
Very well written!
