Thinking of you on your birthday, Mom...
Sometimes it hits me like that… like a slug to the belly or a punch to the gut You would think I’d remember after so many years But minds play tricks to fool us to keep our breathing even It’s her recipes that trip me up (the Chinese sweet and sour ones) that give the old Kung Fu Those measurements of vagueness make me think to call, but as I reach… It hits me then-- (that double-me-over ache) She isn’t there to answer.

You reach depths of loving in such an effective and perfectly understated way.
I miss mine too and it comes on suddenly, like a refrain that surges, an inward clarity of absence that hits you just as you need her.

Yes. And isn't it interesting that your body knows a date better than your cognitive brain? I mean, I feel so orphaned--like something's missing, and then it hits me too. It's Mom's birthday. Happy Birthday, Mom! I think I'm going to plant something in her honor today.
