I was recently in a bad wreck. Due to pending litigation, this poem is vague and does not state when/where nor who was involved nor what happened. I had suffered writer's block for quite some time and thought that I would share this poem.

The morning was cliché…blue skies, smiling sun.
Nothing seemed to whisper “Your time on Earth is done”
A monster lurking a few steps behind this unwitting soul…
What started out as routine was soon to lose all control.

Mind lulled by the radio on that cracked asphalt trail..
Brake marks and wooden crosses sigh where fate had failed.
Wooden crosses weeping beside those gravel shoulders.
Each begging remembrance as memory turns colder.

Another mile down, still I continue moving onward.
Nothing felt off kilter, nothing so screamed “coward!”
Rearview mirror showed the fiend of chrome, metal and glass…
inches just behind me…O Lord, please let this too pass.

Traffic stalled, ant trails halted for but one split second.
The semi behind was a near miss…eternity not beckoned.
A sigh of relief as viewed in that un-lying rearview mirror.
Body shaking with realization of this near miss fear.

Vehicles moved on again…commuters chasing their fate.
Smiling sun lifts even higher and further lights the interstate.
Up a hill and around a bend, there came another stop.
“This is it, I’m dead and gone” was my last and only thought.

The morning was cliché’…blue skies…a smiling sun.
The impacts were fierce and sudden…yet my time on Earth’s not done.
A monster was lurking only a few steps behind this unwitting soul…
What started out as routine was lucky not to have ended all.

Lori,
Love your description of the crosses roadside. Sorry this happened to you. Sounds as though your luck is in the same class as mine - nonexistent:) Great writing!

Your poem serves as a powerful and very real reminder of how fragile is our existence; we really never know at all what can happen in a fraction of a moment. Thank you, Lori. I hope you are well. Love and best wishes to you,

Regis
