There’s no way I can show you-
Just how much I love you,
Standing here on another shore-
Measuring the distance in my heart,
As I watch the tide rise and fall.
I leave my footprints alone in the sand-
Soon to be washed away by the wind and waves,
While I listen for the whispers of your voice
In the warm evening breeze that rolls off the ocean,
As I catch them one by one and place them in my mind.
I sit in the darkness and listen to the waves-
Seeing only the whitecaps as they tumble to the shore,
I look up at the stars - waiting for one to fall,
Knowing that it will take more than a wish
To make this loneliness in my heart go away.
I stand up and face the ocean-
Blowing you a kiss across the starlit sky,
Hoping that in the morning you will awaken
To find it still fresh upon your cheek,
And know that I sent my love.
Reminded me very much of my girlfriend, a nurse at Stanford Hospital, with some old-fashioned ideas who left on a working trip around the world. I followed her with letters and poems.
But when she was working at a quarantine station in Australia, I sent her a very honest letter about my experience with another woman while she was so far away from me, she tore up my letter and poem and threw them into Sydney Bay. According to her friend and former roommate, because I never heard from her again.
