written for a friend whose brother predeceased him but whom he loves and misses nonetheless
Martin
I stretch forth my arms for Martin... Could I have sunken my heart's well any deeper? If only for Thee were his years meant to be I remain alas my brother’s keeper.
Why didst Thou irreparably my mother’s heart break? For Martin, until her last day, she grieved Burdened by guilt she shouldn't have borne Yet to Thee only did she steadfastly cleave.
Until today of my life these many years later, In prayer have I called Thee in dread. I can’t help but wonder why Martin … When Thou couldst well have taken me instead.
I writhe in my anguish to fathom, Thy ways in the wee hours I’ve sought, Why didst Thou decree so severely? The mystery of his few days hath wrought.
