I remain no poet, but want to share her life

I miss her greatly

Poem Artwork

Aggie appeared in February

Can't put her in the dog pen, she is too bouncy, too lively

husband said, She is Not Our Dog

March brought ice storms, shivers and Aggie moved into the garage at night

husband said, She is Not Our Dog

April I finally thought, lovely little girl or not, she must not have a home, louts have dropped her

husband said, She is Not Our Dog

I got her collar

She returned, collar gone, another in its place.... this one had her 'license plate'

Call to the vet listed reveals she belongs to the neighbor up on the hill

husband said, She is Not Our Dog

Called the neighbor, they never came, her g'ma called her him and said his name was coop.

hmmmmm, I might run away too if my g'ma called me a boy, and my people named me coop

husband said, She is Not Our Dog

Filled with a total joy of life, love of people, and curiosity
Playing in the pasture, waiting down at the end of the lane, nightly sleeping in the garage Aggie the little giggle girl was with us through the spring and into fall

husband said, She is Not Our Dog

Aggie became part of the horse herd... ate from their grain pans, flitted around the pasture where no dog is allowed, drank from their trough

husband said, She is Not Our Dog

and suddenly she is gone

Husband drove for miles looking for a little white body, none found

I miss her so

husband said, She is Not Our Dog, but I miss her too

=================================

Can only hope that she was picked up by someone who thought she had no home, someone who will treat her well

and not that she was run over, or worse

Oh, I know this is an old piece but the title drew me in and my heart swelled with pride knowing you cared enough for this creature of God that would bring even a moment of love into your life shared with her. I am sure if you have not located her or a body nearby that she got picked up and most likely by someone who had a heart enough to pick up what they believed to be a stray. We can only pray that she is happy whoever she is with. I do not know why you prefaced this saying you are not a poet...when this is what a poet does best...putting lines together to not just send a message or a story but so creatively as you have here.

YOUR ATTACHMENT TO A WONDERFUL ANIMAL GREW QUICKLY AND EVENTUALLY YOUR HUSBAND (THOUGH HE DIDN'T WANT TO ADMIT IT) GOT CAUGHT UP TOO. SHE SHED A SPECIAL KIND OF LOVE IN YOUR LIVES AND I HOPE LIKE YOU...THAT SOMEONE FOUND HER AND IS CARING FOR HER AND SHE IS STILL SPREADING HER SPECIAL KIND OF LOVE. ENJOYED THIS WORK VERY MUCH. THANKS FOR SHARING AND HAPPY EASTER TO YOU! LOVE,

Ah, if we could, we could be an adoptive colony for "street hounds." This is a wonderful presentation and something everyone can relate to, the sign of a well written poem. Thank you!

Thanks for the reviews. I greatly appreciate the feed back.

NOT OUR DOG makes me want to cry. It is a caring but sad poem. My husband and I are avid pet lovers. Hope your dog friend found her home- or found her BIG home in the heavens. Some people don't realize that dogs have a soul and are smarter than many people.
If by chance she is alive and ever finds her way to Ohio, we will take her into our home and she will be made to feel like family.
Take care.
Blessings,
Judith

Special little dog. Where did she go, Oh where oh where has my little dog gone, I only hope she is alive and being taken care of. My little dog named Joy died on Oct 23, 03 a day before my birthday. Such a sad time I had over her. Get so attached to our pets, it's hard to realize they have to go.

oh, Molly...you write so touchingly! The loss of a pet -- even if it's not 'ours' -- always hurts. At least Aggie had you and a happy life for a while and you had her!

Small consolation, I know. May this heart-felt poem encourage others to welcome a stray into their lives.

Always such a sad tale when people turn their back on responsibility. Poor little dog paid the price of neglect, just as children do when their parents turn their back. You have tugged at my heartstrings with this piece...

Be safe,
Karen

Still say you're a poet: as long as you're putting lines down on paper, your feelings, you're a poet.

And you've penned a heartbreaker! Not your dog: but yours, all the way. Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

So very sad, Molly, and a story repeated thousands of times around this vast nation. Far too many have now lost the respect and love we once had in this country for our devoted pets, and we truly need far more caring souls like you. And I truly hope she's OK, too.
