Back Draft

Flat. The scenery was flat.
Paper houses, and cellophane
children. Their voices screech,
owls on the hunt.
Sound
wafting through an aluminum background
I composed as a child.

Imagine a movie where the actors
aren’t acting. They're standing,
sitting, rationalizing
what they are supposed to be doing --
only no one is doing
a thing. Change the channel.

The boy next door wasn’t home,
or he was except he forgot
to watch
through the window. His mother furious
with him the night before threatened: If I find you on that sill
one more time it will be the end of it!

Not knowing what “the end of it” would be,
he forgot to watch.

Sometimes the night comes early
and the street lights aren’t ready–

there are laws to abide by, cosmic occurrences
pre-commissioned to subtly
(or not so subtly)
remind us there is a reason
for everything:

My brother is a thief by nature, banned
from every store Jersey through Pennsylvania.
The women he held company with have all
been thieves as well.

This, of course, would mean nothing
in concurrence with this poem
except that it does:

Paper houses, children screeching,
actors
who aren’t acting,
and a boy who always watches
what the neighbors are doing instead
of doing whatever it is he should be doing. His mother, unaware

of why she finally
had enough with his dilly-dallying,
came to apologize
when she read in the paper
that I had been robbed.

It is true their are spiritual laws in effect past the laws of land and the ending was excellent to this poem...

Surreal implosion of voyeurism and surveillance of poetic excellence, Maria! Who knew as a child, composing, what we would end up with as adults?? Would we be robbed, not only of material possessions, but also emotions? At least, we're not shy hens huddling at the corner of the pen. This neighbor boy just as well could have been me looking at a nude woman mannequin in the store windows, where as a young girl, I had such a fascination with the windowdressers playing with adult Barbies...the only thing I stole were peeks where the mute plastic actress wasn't acting...just my fantasy imagination...good to see you posting again, Maria...be well...Blessed Be.

A beautiful flower for the literary Spring. "Back Draft" bears the aroma of symbolism, impressionism and dramatic rhythm.

What a total TREAT!! Great to have your voice back in chorus here, Maria... or rather, as a wonderful soloist because your distinctive flavour has such a rich and authoritative quality to it. Acute, astute and penetrating, as usual, no messing here. Lifetimes and lifestyles are captured with intensity and yet defined precision as befits the moment. As much as it often drives us insane, how often do we live to regret the "usual" not happening which might otherwise have prevented the untoward disaster? Life is sometimes full of dramatic irony, even when we paint it black, monotone or lifeless. Your usual high-calibre of thought and execution here, Maria. TY Kate xx

This is beautiful, Maria! I especially love this line: Sometimes the night comes early and the street lights aren’t ready– and the repetition of the first stanza. Remarkable work! It's so great to read your work again.

Be well,

Kathy

Our imagination tends to be wild at times...Sitting on this window sill meant something to him but stayed in trouble,,,There is a reason for everything...I agree...
