Pipeline
Surfing then
was on a turquoise sea
by golden beaches
in the endless summers
of our youth ---
Tanned bodies,
platinum-haired,
with eyes as empty
as the sky.
Surfing now
is hanging ten
on a keyboard,
punching holes
on a techno-web
in cyberspace,
catching waves
between the tides
of regulated chaos.
Only last night,
cruising data doorways
I found the key.
It winked seductively,
“Friend Search,”
and so I did.
So many names from all those summers ---
but not yours.
Could I risk
the random search,
flickering though the universe,
pale cosmic dowser
into the blackest hole of all,
blinking coldly,
”No matches found,”
then coyly prompting,
“Search again?”
Whatever for?
I always knew
that at the end
you would be as gone
as yesterday.
And yet,
these decades later,
I wonder.
I even hope.
