I am dead

It was weeks ago; in the dark alley of a street I witnessed the rape. I hadn’t tried to save her. I had reasons at that time.
Of course it was a shock to me, I stopped even writing poems.
Yesterday I saw her again…now I realize that my reasons were not an alibi. Now I blame myself. I think I was dead at that moment, all my goodness had died and now I am just a man like all others. Oh god, I am dead…

In the dark hours of night,
I heard her screaming.
I saw her struggling.
Still I didn’t move.

They were four men.
Big and muscular fellows.
They were strong and mighty.
They were kindles and tough.

She was a beautiful girl
She was only eighteen.
Her eyes were so innocent,
But they didn’t see it.

One of them grabbed her.
She escaped from him and began to run.
But there was a man on her way.
He pushed her backward.

Then they surrounded her.
One of them striped her.
She screamed like a child.
And I was watching all these.
Still I didn’t move.

I was helpless.
I was not able to help her.
I was not able to stop them.
So I stayed still.

After an hour,
They all were gone.
She lay on the street,
Naked and hurt.

Slowly I approached her.
Gently I put my hand on her shoulder.
Suddenly she looked at me.
Instantly she spread her thighs...

“Rape me, rape…”
She uttered and screamed.
She grabbed my hand,
She pulled me to her.

Then she began to laugh.
She laughed and laughed.
Then my hands got free.
Then I ran…

******** ****************
Today I saw her again.
She was mad and ugly looking.
She wore dirty clothes.
Her hair wasn’t combed.

“You don’t save her”.
My heart blamed me.
“But I was not able...”
“No, you didn’t try”
But…

“I am sure that,
If she was your sister or mother,
You would have tried.
But you didn’t try.
Because she was a stranger to you.”

Then with a shock,
I knew that my verses were just lies.
I had thought I had a beautiful mind.
I had thought that I loved all…

But now my heart says that
I am dead…

My dear friend...If you had
tried to help this poor woman
you may not be here today. God
has his reasons for having you
be still...they could have had
a gun...and God just wasn't ready
for you yet. God had his reasons
my dear friend.

Fear I can understand and not taking action under circumstances that gave you no win.
I too would have had no way of defending her. But I do know one thing, I would have killed all three of them with a gun of any kind. Or died trying to kill them. To advance in these circumstances a weapon is necessary. I am Clark Kent but I am not Superman. You felt what any unarmed man would have felt. And I would have felt the same thing. Bill

David,
Your not dead, a horrible fear came over you. The mind is working the body freezes. Heartbreaking write, but don't be so hard on yourself. Take care.

But don't be so hard on yourself, okay? When death is discovered, like this, a life has also been discovered. It's a lesson, David, on the path to learn more about self. Great write, and so glad that you shared a most heartwrenching subject....thank you
In Spirit,
Bear

So very sad the fear that clutchs at our hearts in time of trouble. Your poem is painfully truthful and it took great courage to present that to us. Thank you.

A courageous and difficult versification. Fear can take hold on everyone of us at times. Mt first tripto Indianapolis I walked one evening past the courthouse and behind the bushes three men were robbing another at knife-point. did I want to help the victim? Yes. Was I able to muster the courage needed to do so? No.nOthers simply walked on with haste pretending not to see. So did I. It seems we have become almost insouciant to our neighbor. but is it insouciance or is it fear? Or are they brothers. David, your poem is a great and consciencious piece with social significance. a masterpiece.
