Holly Near wrote "The open palm of desire wants everything, everything".
This poem is about our will to possess.

You are walking with your head bent.

You are walking with your head reaching the sky.

And everything you see is a reflection of you.

The self reaches for love,

while greed reaches to possess.

Creation and destruction live

equally inside of us.

And so the open arms of love welcome

to give and to receive.

Those same arms may grab to covet

everything in reach.

The arms of emptiness

may fight to have

what no one may keep,

pulling trees from their roots,

pulling riches from the ground,

poisoning the sky.

Who will be left to survive?

Who will be left to grieve

the day the earth falls into the sea?

And everything you see is a reflection of you.

This is the hour to decide.

It's easy to reflect on what is poisoning us as we lose one species after another with no coming back. No zoo kept specimens to recuperate and return to the wild.

No, write a book about making wealth without producing anything of any value and it will be a very good seller if not a best seller. People seek out greed, gold dug from the Earth as its price increases. Destruction you subtly describe tearing awa the very fabric of the living ecosystem.

It is certain that the Earth and life, itself, will exist long after our species lies rotting in the sun, never to return.
