I saw her
she was there
…must have been the lighting
My mood
She looked “alive”
active, part of society
and I wanted to ask her,
Did you know you’d land in prison?
and that you would be the guard
drawing up the escape plans
handing them out like coveted cigarettes
… and yet nobody is smoking them
And I wanted to ask,
Can you pin point the exact day?
The day you blew your chance, lost your opportunity, went screaming down the wrong avenue
… that others didn’t , have
Did you care?
But what I really wanted to ask her was,
Can you throw out some dates on your calendar? Sunday works best for me
I need you to remind me
of everything I’ve forgotten
This piece creates a kind of tension between authorial intent, and reader response. Reads like a storyboard for a movie short. However, for me, 'Was' also serves as a gentle reminder that forgetting is a part of life, but that some things - and some people - remain important to remember. Hope you're well. rlc
There a haunting effect this masterful sense of behind bars and looking in from far away. Add to the poem its vibrant subtext and you have a piece of writing that stays with one, whether old or young. Good work here, Morgan. Original and poignant.
