 A Dream Just a Dream

by John Herlihy

Sometimes a dream is just a dream,
All cloudy and misty, not plate clean.
Not a dream to fill our hours of slumber,
But dreams that raise puff clouds of wonder.

Just because a dream seems totally real,
Like a dream that our hearts quietly steal,
Doesn't mean the dream will finally come true ,
Like all those dreams that we forever knew.

Some dreams have breath to live forever,
On the horizon of our world to depart never.
Occasionally when fretful they come to mind,
To simmer and soothe with promises kind.

Still, give me a dream more than just a dream,
To shine down upon us as a tender moonbeam.

SOMETIMES A DREAM IS JUST A DREAM, TRUE. BUT THEN THERE ARE TIMES WHEN A DREAM COMES TRUE...MEANING GOD ALLOWED THE DREAM FOR A PURPOSE. ENJOYED, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I always dream; almost every time I fall asleep, I dream. I would put some of my dreams into my stories. They would make a good story. I think good dreams are God's miracles, but the bad dreams... we don't want to remember them anyway.

You have covered the many nuances of the dream state. They rarely predict the future, but when they do it's miraculous. Some of them the way you pose, a really too vague to understand.

Others can be fearful and become a nightmare. My partner has those sometimes. I wake her to ask her what's happening and she tells me.

The writer touches on (IMO) the epistemological, existential, and philosophical nature of dreams. "More than just a dream" could be a dream that compels us to act, to believe, or to imagine beyond the present moment. Like a seed for change. "Give me a dream more than just a dream" could be a call for dreams that are not only vivid, but are also meaningful, transformative, capable of bridging the gap between imagination and reality, and also envisioning possibilities that might help shape the waking world. An interesting sonnet, John, that encourages thought. Enjoyed. Peace. r
