Unseasonably Seasoned Seasons

[illuminating thoughts... by Sha'Tara]

I've got a bone to pick with the use of the word "season" and "seasonal."  If you look at the below quote (I have no idea what it means, I just picked it up because it had that annoying word in it and I wanted to make a point so what it means is not the point.)

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.3 percent in August on a seasonally adjusted basis, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. (Before seasonal adjustment, the all items index increased 0.1 percent for the month.)

There you see it clearly: something is adjusted seasonally.  Not "seasonably."  Yet, if I were to speak of the same seasonal thing, but relate it to weather instead of pricing, I'd have to say, it's "unseasonably" warm (or cold) today.

Seems to me that if something was "seasonable" or "unseasonable" it would be food.  Not some seasonally related aspect of weather.  If I season (or not season) my food, it is because it is "seasonable" in nature, not seasonal.   Well, sure, some foods are seasonal in nature, but that's entirely outside the theme of this erudite piece.

I can't season the weather, so how can it be unseasonable?  To me, an unusual aspect of weather for a particular season means that it is unseasonal, not unseasonable.  But I find that the word "unseasonal" which would be a perfect piece to use in resolving this conundrum is not in the dictionary inventory.  No Universal Product Code so can't order one.  (By the way, how can a planet-locked tribal bunch of barely out of trees and loincloths Earthians claim that their product codes are "Universal"?  Talk about hubris!  Digressing, but an interesting point for later... for example, what's the UPC for an inter-galactic Pleiadian shuttle craft?)

However, and of course, this little discussion is all for naught because the weather is very much like God:  you don't tell it what to do nor when to do it.  And you can't change its flavour because it is unseasonable.  And, there is no good or bad weather.  There is only weather as there is always weather.  So, if you believe in the weather, the only word of advice I can give is: accept and adapt.  Don't argue or pray, it's not listening either.

Reg,

you certainly come up with some imaginative things. I've never thought of that. I live in an agriculture community, and is the work seasonal or seasonable? But your fabulous write, just accept and adapt, the weather isn't listening either.

"A tisket a tasket a green and yellow basket",filled to overflowing with the intricacies of semantics demanded by the English language. If you do not like a challenge in communications, try another language. Get the inflection wrong, and it is sudden death in an attempt to get a point across. In this case however, it is clearly relating to the growing seasons as Ron Hull pointed out. Regis, I am removing myself from this thicket. Thanks for sharing this perspective my friend. May your day be filled with joy and love. Jon Michael

So true, we have to accept and adapt. A good write.

Well I'll be go to hell. Ya got me. This is like the momentary landing we endure with each airplane flight. Or the pervasive claim of nearly every product we buy that "nothing" is better. That is almost always true but not the message intended. Patrick

I don't know what "eurdite" means, but those indices refer to growing seasons and go back to the early almanacs.

As for "universal," you'll have to blame the Catholics. It seems the the Roman Universal Church means the same thing.

I'm still reeling from my poem about our "unkept" lawn when MS Word rudely informed me that I had been misspelling and mispronouncing, "unkempt" all these years!

Ah, the English language.

Oh man, Regis. You may have just prompted me to write a thesis of my own but then you might think me unreasonal or should that be unrewasonable? Oh well. You made a good point however though we don't tell the weather when to snow. It tells us if it's July the answer is no. Or did I get off the subject.
LOL! All kidding aside I enjoyed this write.
God bless,
Lew
